Born in Barnsley on 10th November 1953, Philip Martin (Phil) Chambers started his career as a schoolboy and went on to represent England Schoolboys. He joined the Barnsley groundstaff as an Apprentice and turned professional in November 1971. He broke into the Barnsley team and soon became a regular, making four hundred and forty-one League starts and one substitute appearance and scored seven goals before joining Hartlepool United in November 1985. He made twenty-nine League starts for the Monkey-hangers before retiring at the end of the season and joining the coaching staff of Rotherham United and finally moved to Scarborough in 1993.
